MUTU MAKES CHELSEA FLOP LIST
Adrian Mutu has made the list of the most expensive flops at Chelsea as compiled by English publication Football London. The Romanian football figure was named on the list of the ten worst Chelsea signings since 2000. Apart from Adrian Mutu, ex-Argentine international Juan Sebastien Veron, Scott Parker, Asier Del Horno and Jiri Jarosik also made the list.
Chelsea signed Adrian Mutu from Parma in the Italian league in 2003 and he had a decent record for the club in front of goal. However, issues off the pitch from him prompted his inclusion on the list.
Adrian Mutu scored ten goals in 27 appearances, but his Chelsea career ended abruptly when the ex-Romanian international striker tested positivefor Cocaine in 2004. He was released by the West London club afterwards. Chelsea felt aggrieved and that led to a 10-year legal action against Adrian Mutu. In the end, he was found liable and told to pay the club the sum of £14.5m. The Blues had paid £15.8m to secure his transfer from Italian team Parma.
Spanish shot stopper KepaArrizabalaga is the most expensive acquisition on the list after Chelsea paid over £71m to sign him from Athletic Bilbao. Chelsea had to pay his release clause to ensure that he joined them from the La Liga team in the summer of 2018. He was the replacement for Belgian international goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois who left the Blues to join Real Madrid in Spain with one year left on his contract at Stamford Bridge.
Kepa was largely unconvincing in his first two seasons at Chelsea and that prompted the club to spend £24m on another goalkeeper in Edouard Mendy. Senegalese national team star Mendy has established himself ad the first team goalkeeper at Chelsea ahead of Kepa since he joined the club from French team Rennes last summer.
